So I've been averaging a month between posts - super diligent.
I had a wonderful time in Florida with the family for Christmas. Also, at that time, it had been very cold and dreary here in Houston so it was nice to feel the sun again. Once back in town I worked a few shifts and then Sarah and I went out in Houston for New Year's Eve. We hit up some gay bars and had a lovely evening.
Throughout most of January, I've just been working and trying to find a new job in Colorado. I went through the entire process of finding a new contract, which was only slightly less stressful than the last time. I was submitted for contracts in Grand Junction, Denver, and Colorado Springs. I was finally accepted at a small hospital which is part of the University of Colorado system in Colorado Springs. I have spent the last week or so doing all the paperwork, necessary lab tests, etc. Everything should be good to go for my Feb 2nd start date.
Ending this contract has been so bittersweet; I am excited to get to Colorado, ski, and experience a new area. However, I am really going to miss the people I've met here - especially our close little group: Abby, Sydney, and Sarah. We have had the best time getting to know one another, have been each other's moral support through our first contract, and have kept the others laughing nonstop. I think I am realizing that one of the best parts of travel nursing is meeting people. This weekend Abby and I went to Austin to visit Sydney (she has already started her contract there) for one last hurrah. Sarah's parents were visiting here in Houston, so she stayed here - we missed her. It was so sad to hug them both as I left, knowing it would be a long while before we were all together again (hopefully in VT this summer!) We have been describing our meeting as four freshmen at their first day in college. We all came to a new city, started orientation on the same day, and didn't know anyone. It was similar to being in the dorms again and meeting people who would remain friends for the rest of your life. We have been through a lot together and I know we'll be in touch as life goes on. Who knows, maybe we'll all end up doing a contract together again! Leaving Houston and going to Colorado Springs without these three is going to be so painful. Thankfully I'll have skiing to help me get through it.
I've been spending this last week packing and cleaning the apartment in preparation to move out at the end of the week. Sarah will be headed off to Tampa for her contract when we move out, and I will spend that night with my cousins Tim and Kate before I fly to Puerto Rico the next day for a cruise. After the cruise, I have 14hrs of driving (which need to happen as soon as I land in Houston) to get me to Colorado Springs the day before my contract starts. An aunt of my friend from college lives in Colorado Springs, and they GRACIOUSLY arranged for me to stay there until I can find an apartment. I am so thankful, as that will make my first whirlwind week there so much easier.
So with that, I need to go pack some more. And Vacuum. And clean the bathroom. And the Kitchen.
Ugh.
